I love Thursdays. Not only do I facilitate our weekly food distribution in Queensbridge on Thursdays, but I also facilitate our weekly grief support group. The "Together We Heal" grief is extremely important to me. Growing up in Queensbridge, and just becoming aware of the world, I have learned that there are sooo many people who have unresolved grief. Everyone experiences grief, all in different ways and to different extents. My community is filled with people with unchecked and unresolved grief. I remember talking to a gentleman a few months ago and he asked why the youth were so angry. I told him they had unresolved grief. He was blown away by our conversation.
Trust me, if more people acknowledged the things that cause them grief, even down to the small frustrating interactions that happen on our way to work or while out grocery shopping, there would be a lost less stressed and angry folks out there. This is why I am committed to this work. Our emotional health and mental health has a direct impact on our physical health and spiritual, or energetic health. Talking through things, even as men, especially as Black men, is a strength and a direct sign of maturity and healthy masculinity.
I am truly grateful for our grief support group. It's helped me in so many ways since its launch nearly 3 years ago. I'm grateful. I'm excited to keep it going.
