How A Simple Interaction Can Lift Your Mood

Earlier today, after leaving our weekly team meeting with The Connected Chef, as I was waiting for the bus to go home, I ran into my dear friend Cynthia Davis. Cynthia is the community outreach coordinator with The Floating Hospital in Long Island City. We first met back in 2012 when we both received proclamations from the then City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer at his annual Black History Month Celebration at the community center in Queensbridge. We both attended weekly NAACP meetings at the community center as well, and that's where our relationship grew.

It wasn't long after connecting that we established a solid friendship, supporting each other's work in various ways. I have to give her a shout out because she brought me in to volunteer with children that were at the clinic with their families. It was so good. I would lead the youth in creative activities from drawing, to writing poetry, to practicing meditation, and so much more. That was a really dope experience that I know I'll never forget. I'm grateful.

A little bit of time had went by without seeing each other. Then, I started seeing her again during community fairs and family days in Queensbridge. She'd either be out there with her job or she'd be volunteering with the NAACP. Some more time went by without seeing each other. Then, out of the blue, we bumped into each other last year. We began talking about working together again. That excited me! She does really great work and I'd love to be part of what they're doing at The Floating Hospital.

But what made today's brief encounter extra special was the compliments she kept giving me. She said I looked like a model, that my energy felt a lot purer, and that it seems as if something has come over me since she last saw me a few months ago. Man. That definitely lifted my spirits a bit. This is why it's important to share your positive thoughts and feelings with folks you care about. You never know how what you say may impact them.

So, thank you my sister. Your words gave me a big boost of energy. I appreciate you and all the love!
